Someone has stepped between you and the person you love. Maybe they smile at you and text your partner behind your back. Maybe they are an ex who will not let go, or a stranger who keeps circling. You can feel them pulling at what is yours. This curse calls on Hashihime, the jealous Bridge Princess of Uji, the dark spirit at the heart of Japan’s oldest love-rival legend, to break their hold, drive them off, and sink their place in your partner’s life beneath the black water of her river.
The legend of Hashihime
Her name means Bridge Princess. Long ago, at the great Uji Bridge south of Kyoto, one of the oldest and longest bridges in Japan, people believed a goddess lived at the crossing and guarded it. Early poets pictured her as a lonely woman waiting through the night for a lover who did not come. A poem in the Kokin Wakashu, a royal collection from around the year 905, wonders whether tonight, again, she lays out one sleeve of her robe on a narrow mat and waits for him. Centuries later Murasaki Shikibu named a chapter of The Tale of Genji after her. Even her name may carry a double meaning, since the old word hashi can mean both bridge and beloved.
Then her story turned dark. In the Sword Chapter, found in the expanded versions of The Tale of the Heike, the legend tells of a noblewoman in the days of Emperor Saga, more than twelve hundred years ago, who was eaten alive by jealousy over a rival. She went to Kifune Shrine in the mountains north of Kyoto and prayed for seven days to be made a demon while still living, so she could destroy the woman she hated. The god took pity and answered her: if you truly want this, change your form and immerse yourself in the rapids of the Uji River for twenty-one days.
The legend says she twisted her long hair into five horns, painted her face and body red, set an iron trivet on her head like a crown with torches burning on its legs, and ran south through the night streets with a torch blazing at both ends in her mouth. Those who saw her are said to have died of fright. After twenty-one days in the river she became Hashihime, the demon of the bridge, and her rival did not survive her.
Her story never faded. The old Noh play Kanawa, The Iron Crown, retells it on the stage with her famous demon mask. And at the real Hashihime Shrine, which still stands at the western end of the Uji Bridge, she is honored to this day as a goddess who severs ties. People come to her to cut a bad bond cleanly away. Her jealousy is so feared that, traditionally, brides and wedding parties will not cross the Uji Bridge or pass her shrine together, for fear she will resent a happy couple. She does not share. She keeps what is hers.
What this curse is, and why it matters
This is a severing and banishing curse built on Hashihime’s two oldest powers: the jealousy that will not tolerate a rival, and the sharp blade that cuts a bond in two. I bring your name, your partner, and the person who has come between you to the Bridge Princess, and I ask her to do what she does best. Break the rival’s hold on your partner. Turn whatever sweetness they share into something cold and tiresome. Sever the thread that keeps pulling the two of them back together, and set Hashihime at the crossing so the interloper cannot find the way back in.
It can be aimed at a rival, a meddler, or an enemy who is trying to come between you and your partner. It can also be turned on a couple you need parted, to pull one person away from the other. Either way, the work is the same: remove the interloper, and cut the hold they have.
This spell may be for you if you have been dealing with:
• The coworker who “just happens” to need your partner’s help every single week
• The ex who keeps liking old photos and messaging at 2 am
• The “friend” who texts your partner but never texts you
• A new face in your partner’s DMs, or an online stranger who got too familiar too fast
• The side person who somehow always knows your partner’s schedule
• The best friend who has quietly wanted your partner for years
• A sister-in-law or in-law pushing an old flame back into the picture
• The rival who keeps turning up at the gym, the church, the bar, or the school pickup
• An ex who uses the kids, a shared pet, or old belongings as an excuse to linger
• The influencer or “just a follower” your partner watches a little too closely
• Someone spreading lies and half-truths to crack the two of you apart
• A person who will not accept that it is over and keeps coming back
• A slow, creeping closeness between your partner and someone else that keeps growing
• A third person stirring doubt, jealousy, and drama between you on purpose
• That gut feeling that someone is working, quietly and patiently, to take your place
Unexpected benefits and Ways This Spell can help you
• The rival quietly loses interest and drifts out of the picture
• A sudden falling-out or cooling between the rival and your partner
• The interloper moves away, changes jobs, or simply stops coming around
• Your partner starts to see through them, and the shine wears off
• A bond that was taking root between them withers before it can bloom
• The constant texting, liking, and “checking in” finally goes silent
• Triangulation ends, and the drama a third person kept feeding dies down
• Protection around a fragile engagement, a wedding, or a marriage under strain
• The person who would not accept the breakup finally lets go and moves on
• Your own peace returns, and the obsessive checking of phones and feeds eases
• Your confidence comes back, and you stop feeling like you are competing for your own partner
• A clean cut from someone you needed out of your life, with less chance they return
Ask yourself
• Who is the one person I wish would simply disappear from my partner’s life?
• When did I first feel someone slip into the space that used to be ours?
• Whose name makes my stomach drop every time my partner’s phone lights up?
• What would my relationship feel like if that person were completely gone?
• Am I tired of being polite to someone who is trying to take what is mine?
• Is there a couple whose bond I need broken so one of them can be free?
• What have I been putting up with that I would never accept if I said it out loud?
A little science
Jealousy over a rival is not weakness or imagination; researchers find it is remarkably common. In a well-known study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2001, psychologists David Schmitt and David Buss gave the name “mate poaching” to the act of trying to attract someone who is already taken. In their first study, more than eight in ten people, both men and women, said someone had, at some point, tried to lure their partner away. So if it feels like a real person is working to come between you and the one you love, you are not being paranoid. It happens to most couples, and it is worth meeting head-on.

• You dream of bridges, dark rivers, iron, candles, or a woman in red
• A knot, a cord, a chain, or a ring breaks or comes undone near you
