Hekate’s Supper at the Crossroads ~ Dark Moon Key-Bearer Spell on the Libra New Moon ~ Saturday October 10 ~ Open the Right Door ~ Lock the Wrong One ~ Cut What Follows You ~ Sweep the House Clean ~ Torchlight for the Road Ahead

On the dark of the moon, Hekate stands where three roads meet, with a torch for the dark and a key for the gate. This spell asks her for three things. Show you the right road. Open the right door and lock the wrong one. Cut loose whatever has been following you, and sweep your house clean behind it.

How this crossroads spell works

I cast all three aspects together for you on the Libra New Moon, Saturday, October 10.

Aspect 1 ~ The Torch: Guidance in the Dark

This is for the choice you cannot see your way through. Two offers. Two people. Stay or go. Your gut says one thing and your head says another. This part asks Hekate to hold the torch so the true road shows itself, and the wrong one stops looking so bright.

Aspect 2 ~ The Key: Doors That Open and Doors That Close

This is for the gate. The landlord, the hiring manager, the admissions office, the judge, the caseworker, the person who holds the yes. It is also for the doors that need to shut and stay shut ~ the ex who keeps knocking, the job you already left, the role you are done playing. This part asks the key-bearer to open what is meant for you and lock what is not.

Aspect 3 ~ The Crossroads Sweep: Cut, Clear, and Protect

This is for what clings. Bad luck that started after a funeral or a breakup. A house that feels heavy after a move, or after someone sick, angry, or unkind lived there. Nightmares. That feeling of being watched or followed. This part cuts the cord at the crossroads, sweeps the house clean, and sets Hekate’s guard at your door ~ the old guardian of mothers and children, and of anyone walking home alone in the dark.

Why October 10

The ancient Athenians kept Hekate’s Supper, the Deipnon, on the last day of every lunar month, the dark of the moon. Households swept and smoked their homes, carried the month’s sweepings and leftovers to a three-way crossroads with a meal for Hekate and the restless dead who walk with her, set it down, and walked away without looking back. Many homes kept a small shrine to her just outside the door, where the doorway and the street made a crossroads of their own. Her old names tell you what she guards: Kleidouchos, the key-bearer. Propylaia, the one before the gate. Enodia, she of the roads. In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter she carries a torch and helps a grieving mother search for her stolen daughter. Hesiod wrote that she sits beside kings in judgment and that Zeus made her a nurse of the young. In a poem by Theocritus, the dogs of the town begin to bark because Hekate is at the crossroads. Centuries later, in the Chaldean Oracles, she was honored as Soteira, the savior and guide of the soul. This year her supper falls on the New Moon in Libra, the sign of the scales, at 9:50 am Mountain time, on a Saturday, Saturn’s day of limits and endings. In India the same day closes the fortnight of honoring the ancestors.

There is a reason endings and beginnings feel stronger on a marked day. Researchers at the Wharton School, Dai, Milkman, and Riis, found that people are more likely to start on their goals right after a “temporal landmark” such as a new week, a new month, a birthday, or a holiday. Searches for the word “diet” rise, gym visits rise, and people commit to goals more often. They called it the fresh start effect. A landmark draws a line between the old you and the one stepping forward. The dark moon is one of the oldest landmarks there is. Hekate’s Supper was the Athenian way of closing the books on a month before the new one began.

Blessings of each aspect

The Torch: a clear choice where there was fog. Less second-guessing. The wrong option losing its shine.

The Key: a yes from the person at the gate. A door that has been closing in your face finally swinging the other way. An old door that stays closed.

The Sweep: a lighter house. Better sleep. The sense of being followed fading. A stronger guard around you, your children, and your animals.

Unexpected ways Hekate can help

• Endless swiping and too many choices, when dating apps or job boards leave you more stuck than when you started

• An ex who keeps turning up in your dreams, your feed, or your “people you may know”

• A house or apartment that never felt right after a move, a death, or a hard roommate

• An inherited ring, chair, or box of things that still carries the weight of an unhappy marriage or a sad life

• Lost keys, lost paperwork, or a missing document you need before a deadline

• A hearing, mediation, custody day, or HR meeting where you have to speak and be believed

• An audition, tryout, exam, or competition ~ Hesiod said she stands by those who compete

• Night-shift work, late-night drives, and walking to the car alone after dark

• Leaving a church, group, family role, or friend circle without fallout following you out the door

• A mother or mother-in-law who walks through every boundary you set

• The middle of life turning: the last child leaving home, the change of life, a career ending, or a new name

• Standing beside a parent or loved one at the end of their life, and needing a steady light at that door

• A loss anniversary that knocks you flat every year

• A pet who slips out, roams, or needs a guard around them

This spell may be for you if you have been dealing with:

• A decision that has been sitting on your chest for weeks

• Doors closing in your face over and over

• A gatekeeper who will not say yes

• Bad luck that will not leave

• A home that feels heavy, cold, or crowded with old energy

• Nightmares or restless sleep

• Someone from the past who will not stay in the past

• Secrets you need brought into the light

• A season of change you did not choose

• A feeling that you need a mother’s protection and do not have one to call

Ask yourself

• If I had to choose by Sunday, which road would I already be walking?

• What door have I been knocking on so long that I forgot to ask if it is mine?

• What door did I close that I keep opening again at 2 a.m.?

• What followed me home from the last funeral, breakup, job, or house?

• Who in my life still has a key they should have given back?

• If my home could exhale, what would it let go of first?

• What would I do if I knew someone was walking beside me in the dark?

Signs this work may be starting to move

• A choice that felt impossible starts to feel obvious, almost boring

• An email, call, or letter arrives from the person at the gate

• You find something you had given up for lost

• The house sounds different, quieter, or feels warmer when you walk in

• The ex, the old job, or the old group stops showing up in your thoughts and your feed

• You sleep through the night, or your dreams turn kinder

• Dogs, keys, or crossroads keep catching your eye in small, odd ways

• You say no to someone who always gets a yes, and nothing falls apart

What I need

• Your full name and birthdate

• A photo if you have one

• A short note about your crossroads: the choice, the door, the house, or what is following you

• Names and photos of anyone else involved, if you have them
