At 12:18 AM Eastern on Sunday, November 1, the waning Moon leaves Cancer and enters proud, fiery Leo, joining Mars and Jupiter, who are both already in Leo. Courage, boldness, luck and the power to be seen gather together in one sign. The Sun is in Scorpio, Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio, and at 3:28 PM Eastern the Moon reaches its last quarter, a decisive turning point that clears the old to make room for the new. This is All Saints' Day, the first day after Samhain, when the veil is still drawn thin.
Long before pumpkins, Irish and Scottish families carved turnips and lit them as lanterns at Samhain. The lanterns were said to guide friendly spirits home and to let the Lantern Keepers, the watchful dead who walk the dark roads, see their way. Spirits see what the living cannot, including every lost thing tucked under a cushion, wandering down a road or forgotten in a drawer. On All Saints' night, while the veil is still thin, I light the old turnip lantern and ask them to lead what is yours back home.
