Michaelmas means Michael’s Mass. In Revelation, Michael and his angels throw the dragon — “that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan” — out of heaven.

In Britain it was a quarter day: rents due, accounts settled, the year hired. Oxford, Cambridge, and the English legal year still call this Michaelmas term.

Old lore: when the devil landed in a bramble he cursed the blackberries — so people say don’t pick them after Michaelmas. A Michaelmas goose was eaten so you “want not for money all the year.” Nights are starting to win over the days. That is when people ask for a guard at the door.

This year it is his own feast, a Tuesday, with a waning Taurus moon three days after the Harvest Full Moon — good for cutting away what does not belong, with steady ground underfoot.

This casting drives out evil, ill wishing, jealousy, and crossed energy. It cuts draining cords, cleanses aura, home, car, and workspace, and shields you, your people, and your livelihood.

It goes first because you cannot fill a house that is still full of someone else’s mess.

Born 1873 in France. Entered Carmel at 15. Lived the Little Way — small things done with great love. Died at 24 on September 30, 1897. Canonized 1925. Youngest Doctor of the Church. Patron of florists and gardeners.

Roses are her sign: a rose handed to you, found where it should not be, seen everywhere, or smelled when no flowers are in the room. The rose novena still asks for that sign.

Her feast was moved to October 1 to sit as close as possible to the day she entered heaven. Thursday is Jupiter’s day. The moon is in Gemini — messages — and her prayer asks for a rose “with a message of love.”

Some prayers feel too small. Some feel too big to say. She is the saint for both. After Michael clears the path, she carries your need in quickly and gently.
