What is a group community casting?

The New Moon in Libra

On October 10, the Sun and the Moon meet at 17°22′ Libra. At a new moon, the Moon sits between the Earth and the Sun, and its lit side faces away from us. It rises and sets with the Sun, so the night sky is left dark and moonless. This is the quiet reset of the lunar month, the moment before the first silver sliver returns.

Libra is the sign of the scales: balance, fairness, harmony, partnerships, justice and fair dealings. This new moon arrives while Venus, the planet that rules Libra, is retrograde (October 3 through November 13). Venus retrograde is known for old love coming back around, past people resurfacing, and a deep look at what you value and what you are worth. Put together, this is a night for setting the scales right.

A little folklore and history

Long before clocks and printed calendars, many ancient peoples, including the Babylonians and the Athenians, began each new month around the dark of the moon, watching the western sky for the first thin crescent to return. The dark moon has always been the turning point, the clean slate.

Libra is the only sign of the zodiac represented by an object instead of a living creature. The Babylonians called these stars the Scales. The Greeks later saw them as the claws of the neighboring Scorpion, and the Romans brought the Scales back. Over two thousand years ago, the Sun stood in these stars at the autumn equinox, when day and night are equal, a perfect picture of balance.

Scales of judgment are even older than the zodiac sign. In ancient Egypt, the heart of the dead was said to be weighed on a scale against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of truth, justice and right order. A heart lighter than the feather passed on. In Greece, Themis was the goddess of divine law and fairness, and later art often shows her holding scales. She is one of the ancestors of the Lady Justice statue you still see outside courthouses today.

A little science

Your brain treats fairness as a reward. In a 2008 brain-imaging study at UCLA, people were offered different ways of splitting a sum of money. When the dollar amount they would receive was exactly the same, a fair offer (like $5 out of $10) made people happier and lit up the brain's reward areas, the same areas that respond to winning money or a favorite food. An unfair offer of the same $5 (out of $23) did not. And when people swallowed an unfair deal anyway, the brain had to work to hold down the sting.
