On Saturday, October 31, the Sun burns in Scorpio, the sign of death, rebirth and hidden power. The waning Moon moves through Cancer, ruler of home, family and the deepest feelings, and in the early evening Eastern time it goes void of course, slipping loose from the ordinary rules until just after midnight. Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio until November 13, pulling buried secrets and old business back to the surface, and Venus is retrograde in Libra, reopening every question of love, fairness and what is owed. This is Samhain, the Witches' New Year, when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest.
The Silent Supper is one of the oldest and most haunting Samhain customs. On the night the veil thins, a meal is laid out in total silence. Places are set for the living, and one place is set for the dead, with a chair left empty for the guest no one can see. No word is spoken from the first candle to the last crumb, because silence is the language the dead understand best. Old tradition says that a spirit honored at this table does not leave empty-handed. They leave behind a blessing, and sometimes they grant the wish of the one who invited them.
Very effective for:
Unchecked, the wish you never speak stays locked in your heart, and the blessing waiting for you on the other side is never claimed.
