On Saturday, October 31, the Sun is in Scorpio, the sign of endings, death and rebirth. The Moon is waning in Cancer, the sign of home, and a waning moon is the time for clearing out and letting go. Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio until November 13, turning us back to look over everything the past year left behind. Halloween is Samhain, the Witches' New Year, when the old year ends and the veil grows thin. The door between the old year and the new one stands open for just one night, and anything you don't want to carry across can be swept out and left behind.
This is the Cailleach's Twelve-Month Sweep, a Witches' New Year threshold rite performed on Halloween night.
The Cailleach is the ancient Veiled One of Scotland and Ireland, the great winter goddess who takes up her staff at Samhain and rules the dark half of the year. She shaped the mountains, raised the storms and, according to the old stories, swept the land clean so it could rest and be reborn in spring. Long ago, families swept their hearths before Samhain and carried the sweepings outside so no bad luck would follow them into the new year. Sometimes they burned them at the crossroads, where the roads and the worlds meet.
This rite calls the Cailleach's broom into your life. It sweeps through each of the last twelve months, one by one, gathers what was left behind and burns it to ash at the crossroads.
